COMPANY HISTORY-  15 years of Flooring Installation, 13 years of Carpet Cleaning, and Now a Flooring Store!

Rohr's Carpet Mechanics began when Richard Rohr got out of the Army.  His father had installed carpet part-time for Rich's grandfather, who owned Rohr's Drapery and Carpet Accessory.  Richard had helped when he was younger, so Rich got his father's tools and started installing for anyone who gave him a call.

Two years went by and Rich's carpet installation turned into Rohr's Carpet Cleaning.  When he bought his first truck-mount cleaning machine, after researching a lot of manufacturers and suppliers and a franchise for the one he thinks is one of the best machines on the market.  Also at that time he started hiring and training employees.

One year later he joined Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Association known as (PCUCA).  He then became certified in carpet cleaning with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).  After attending the carpet cleaning classes, Richard started sending his employees to some of the courses.  Since joining the PCUCA, Richard has attended other courses to diversify the services that his company offers.

The courses in carpet cleaning teach the technician what chemicals and pH levels are safe to use on carpet without voiding the carpets warranties and what might happen when using too high pH or a harsh cleaning agent on carpet might do. (Such as turn it yellow or void the warranty a carpet has.)  Shaw carpet manufactures recommend hot water extraction on the Stain Master Carpets every 18-24 months to keep their texture retention warranties on the carpet.  It is recommended but not mandatory that an application of Teflon stain and soil protection be applied after each cleaning.  There are many advantages of using a truck-mount machine over smaller portable machine.  Heat and extreme vacuuming being one of them.  Stop by the store for an infomation brouchure about hot water exraction cleaning, or look at the carpet cleaning section of this website.

The courses in odor control teach our techs that in some cases, for the health of our client, it may be best to replace the carpet and some baseboards along with sealing the floor to eliminate the odor.  Sometimes the odor may not be coming from the carpet.  Rohr's carpet actually had a client that had an odor in one of their upstairs bedrooms.  After cleaning and applying a deodorizer, along with an ozone machine, the odor left only to return in a few days.  After further investigation, a squirrel had gotten into a hole in the roof and died inside the bedroom wall.  Removal of the squirrel and some of the wall removed the odor.

Richard and his wife, Kay, have also taken a color repair course in Denver, CO.  They did not only learn how carpet fibers get their color, but also why some carpets have staining from one chemical and other carpet fibers showed no effect.  Not all carpet fibers perform the same but all have benefits and locations where they work the best.  This is good information for when we sell carpet to our customers, knowing where the carpet is going to be installed and what kind of soiling and staining it might incur.  We try educate our clients on what carpet fiber is best for them.  The color repair course demonstrated how to dye a full room of carpet to another color or a darker shade.  Richard does not usually perform carpet dying because most carpets cannot be dyed to exact color the customer wants.  Rohr's usually only dyes carpets to make the stain less noticeable, in some cases it is better to surface graph another piece of carpet in (this is also called patching).  (This was Richard and Kay's most memorable course because while they were attending the training in Denver, their car was stolen from the hotel parking lot.)

Richard has also attended and is certified for carpet repair/ reinstallation taught by an internationally recongnized installer and certified carpet inspector. In the course the attnedees learned how to stretch carpet and confidently offer a 10-year warranty on the stretch of their installed carpet.  Attending the training also gave Richard many new ways to repiar carpets and how in most cases it is easier and looks better to surface graft, or "patch", a carpet, then to attempt to spot dye an area.  Richard says that he has saved the lives of many dogs by reparing holes dug or chewed in carpet by using a left over piece of carpet or by removing a piece of existing carpet from an inconspicuous area such as the back of a closet.  Rohr's has recieved many compliments and thank you's from customers who have had their two year old or older carpets restretched, because the initial installation by another installer lost its stretch.  They then clean the carpet to bring the carpet back to near-new condition.

Rohr's Carpet has sent employees to Water Damage Restoration and Microbial Remediation (Mold tech).  They also have done a lot of water disaster work for the last 9 years.

The education course, which Rich considers the most valuable was a Health and Safety course taught by an OSHA certified instructor.  Rohr's Carpets not only takes an extreme interest in the health and safety of their employees, but also for the clients they work for.  If Rohr's Carpet's employees see any potiental hazard such as moldy walls or carpets, it are brought to the attention of the client they are working for.  A simple task such as removing the old carpet that is being replaced is not always easy to remove safetly.  If the carpet is jute back with repeated moisture damage mold is more often than not found growing on the backside of the carpet.  When that carpet is pulled back and moved around the mold spores are disturbed and become airborne.  Along with anything else the carpet has collected over the years (Remember carpet is a filter).  This can make for an unhealthy environment for anyone not wearing proper respiratory protection.  In some cases, Rohr's Carpet Mechanics will use an air scrubber to clean the air and keep potintal airborne hazardous materials to a minimum.  This makes for a safer environment for our clients and employees.  Think about it.  Who wants a lot of mold spores in the air as the new carpet is being installed?  Having the right equipment and the knowledge to do it saftely is a big plus for any business.

Rohr's Carpet Mechanics Flooring Center is located at 722 East 7th in Hays.  It was born out of the idea "We clean the floor, we install the floor, we fix the floor, why not sell the floor?!"  On carpet sales we offer a no wrinkle, 10- year guarantee on the stretch of our installation.  Terms and conditions apply.  Continue to service and clean the carpets long after the sale.  Rohr's Carpet Mechanics has an education program for their employees and strives to learn the latest techniques for installing most flooring as well as how to clean and extend the life of your carpets and other flooring.  Rich was once told by the late Ralph Bloss (CEO of Steam-Way Internationally a truck-mount carpet cleaning machines manufacture in Denver, CO); "A great company is always looking for great employees."  Rich is always looking for great carpet cleaners or installers.  He has talked to many installers about continuing education, And was surprised to hear some say "I have been an installer for "X" many years what else can someone teach me?"  Rich's philosiphy is, "Education should say something about it. If teachers and doctors must take refresher courses to stay current, Rohr's Carpet Mechanics employees must stay current too."

For people who buy from Rohr's Carpet Mechanics. Rich offers free training to people who want to install their own laminate flooring.  Rohr's Carpet Mechanics Flooring Center also has a nice selection of vinyl's, carpet, refinish wood, and different laminated floating floors, with wood or ceramic tile patterns.  Stop by and get a floor you can walk on!
